Selected field of participants
Olympic, world and European champions lead the field of participants at Switzerland's official show jumping tournament on the Ascension weekend. The proven sporting highlights, the high international reputation of the tournament and the attractive prize money of almost one million euros ensure that the equestrian stars from all over the world will be coming to St. Gallen again this year. With the three-time British Olympic champion Ben Maher (world no. 2), the two Swiss riders Steve Guerdat (world no. 5) and Martin Fuchs (world no. 6) as well as the Bavarian Max Kühner (world no. 7), who competes for Austria, and the German Richard Vogel (world no. 9), five riders from the top 10 of the Longines world rankings are registered.
In addition to Guerdat and Fuchs, Swiss chef d'equipe Peter van der Waaij has also named Edouard Schmitz and Nadja Peter Steiner to the team, as well as twelve other riders from the Swiss cadre. It will be anything but easy for Switzerland to win the Nations Cup for the third time in a row. All eight other teams are capable of winning. In addition to Vogel, national coach Otto Becker is relying on such illustrious names as Hans-Dieter Dreher, Olympic champion Marcus Ehning, Sophie Hinners and Michael Viehweg for the German team. Thanks to Roger Yves Bost and Penelope Leprevost, France can count on two Olympic champions who will be competing alongside Stanislas de Malet, Nicolas Sers and Olivier Robert.
In addition to Maher's three, Scott Brash brings two more Olympic gold medals to the British team, which is completed by Jane Annett, Jessica Mendoza and Matthew Sampson. Saudi Arabia did not win a gold medal at the 2012 Games in London, but at least a bronze medal, surprising the experts. As in Paris 2024, Ramzy al Duhami was already part of the team back then. Jos Verlooy, Yuri Mansur and Denis Lynch lead the teams from Belgium, Brazil and Ireland. In addition to Kühner, the Austrian team also includes Christoph Obernauer, Alessandra Reich, Katharina Rhomberg and Markus Saurugg. Tournament director Kai Huttrop-Hage is very satisfied: "The interest in our event was so enormous that we decided on nine nations. The chef d'equipe have kept their promises and are arriving with extremely strong riders and their top horses."
