History

Only one show-jumping event per year and country carries the title CSIO – Concours de Saut International Officiel

To a CSIO, the National Equestrian Federations send four riders who form the official team. This team, consisting of 4 or 5 riders and their top horses, is often identical with the National Team, who is selected for Continental-/World Championships or Olympics. The highlights of a CSIO are the Grand Prix and the Nations Cup – competitions being part of yearly standings and counting for the world-ranking of riders and nations.

CSIO Switzerland: A story with many highlights, full of sportive top-performances, lots of emotions, moments of cheering and disappointments; tenths of seconds and millimeters decide about victory or defeat. Young and unknown newcomers, riding like hussars, have left their marks in this history even during European Championships.

International top equestrian events in Switzerland are taking place since the century before last: 1884, the first “St. Galler Internationale Pferdesporttage” took place, the precursor of today’s CSIO Switzerland.

Until the seventies, Lucerne and Geneva , until and incl. 2006 Lucerne and St. Gallen organized alternately the CSIO Switzerland, who is, since 1993, one of the top 4 outdoor equestrian events worldwide.

From 1987 to 2012, Peter Stoessel has been the President of this outstanding event and guarantor for the professional Planning and Organization of this world-class event. After two years of co-presidency together with his daughter, Nayla Stoessel, the latter took over the event direction in 2013.

Tens of thousands of spectators in the Gruendenmoos, one of the most beautiful outdoor equestrian stadiums in the world, and hundreds of thousands of TV viewers are watching the sport and the show in St. Gallen every year.
